JOANNE YULAN

Scottish-born contemporary artist

RECENT WORKS

Joanne Yulan’s signature abstract art is made with ink on handmade Indian paper, inspired by calligraphy and the fluid nature of the written word. Her artistic process includes studying positive and negative spaces, the dissection of symbols and characters and their reconstruction. Creating these works involve calculated technique, layering watercolour, and Chinese inks in various intensities applied to the paper with timed precision. However, given the unpredictable nature of the materials, at the moment of creation, the paintings become a reflection of spontaneous movement.

Joanne Yulan is a Scottish born artist but from Chinese, South African descent. Painting since 2011 she has developed a language for her art that reflects her global heritage. She was encouraged to paint as a child and her mother introduced her at that time to the art of Chinese calligraphy. As an art student, she was drawn to minimal modern art. Her works combine the fluidity and spontaneity of painterly brush strokes with a precise eye for composition and space. Her interest in process painting reminiscent of the heroic works of Abstract Expressionism that dominated mid-century Western Art.
