COLLAGES

In a new chapter of work artist, Joanne Yulan moves her abstract works into the new medium of collage. Key themes like elegant movement and balance can be seen clearly in these new works. Inspired by the artworks of British Modernist artists such as Victor Pasmore, Barbara Hepworth and Terry Frost, she takes a  step away from the unpredictable and spontaneous freedom of ink and painting. Joanne Yulan instead focuses on colour play, composition and precision. Each element is hand-painted in gouache and emulsion before being cut with a scalpel and placed on the hand-made and tinted Indian paper background. Each composition conveys a sense of stillness, just at the moment before impending movements such as tipping or falling.
